PATIENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR FLEXIBLE SIGMOIDOSCOPY
Please report to the Newton-Wellesley Hospital Surgical Center 45 minutes prior to your
scheduled procedure, which will be done in the Gastroenterology (GI) suite.
Please pre-register by calling 617-243-6122 within one week of the procedure.
Ambulatory Registration is located in the main lobby of the Newton Wellesley Hospital.
Procedure Preparation:
1. Take 2 room temperature tap water enemas rectally at least 2 hours before
the scheduled procedure. You can obtain Fleet-Enema Applicators from your
local drugstore, over the counter. You will empty the Fleet Enema fluid from
applicator and fill with tap water.
2. Attempt to eliminate before coming to the GI Department on the day of the
procedure.
The procedure usually is well tolerated. It takes anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes, but
allow one hour for your visit.
You will be allowed to drive yourself home after the procedure. Please feel free to call if
you have any questions.

Be sure you have an insurance referral provided by your primary physician, if required by
your insurance company.
If you have any questions about your procedure, please call Dr. Kopp’s office at (617)
527-6200. Please make note that cancellation of the procedure needs to be made 72
hours prior to your procedure with Dr. Kopp’s office to allow a new patient to be
scheduled and to prepare adequately.
