COLONOSCOPY

PLEASE EDUCATE YOUR FRIENDS, COLONOSCOPY CAN SAVE LIVES!

If you are over 50 the American Cancer Society recommends colon cancer screening. Colon cancer screening is proven effective for anyone over 50 years of age.
Colon cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the United States. It affects men and women equally. We do not know the true cause of colon cancer but genetics, family history, diet, smoking and obesity increase the risk for developing Colon cancer. If diagnosed early, before any symptoms occur, colon cancer can often be cured. Unfortunately, many people go without screening.

Colonoscopy is recommended for average risk patients over the age of 50 years. A colonoscopy enables your doctor to examine the lining of your colon (large intestine) for abnormalities. During this examination a thin flexible tube is inserted into the rectum and advanced slowly through the colon. The doctor will be able to detect any abnormalities in the lining of your colon including polyps, tumors, and inflammation. Biopsies of abnormal area may be taken and sent to the laboratory of further evaluation. If polyps are detected they will be removed during the procedure. If a polyp is too large to be removed during the procedure, your doctor will discuss this with you after the procedure. Prior to the exam you will be asked to follow certain dietary restrictions and use a special bowel cleansing preparation. Most medications can be continued as usual. However, it is very important to inform your doctor and the scheduler about medications that you may be taking, particularly blood thinners and insulin products as well as any medical conditions such as heart, lung, and kidney disease. You will need to have a responsible person drive you home after the exam.

Please schedule your appointment by calling directly Dr. Kopp’s office at 617-527-6200.
