Does milk bother you?

Lactose intolerance
You don't like milk, and ice cream bothers you? Some people have problems digesting lactose. Do you have gas bloating, nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain?
Did you know that 20% prescription drugs and 6% of over the counter  drugs use lactose as base ingredient? Watch for hidden sources of lactose in foods such as sauces, pancakes, candies, lunch meats and many more. Watch your calcium intake.
Have you ever had a Hydrogen Breath Test?

Do you have belly aches?

Do I have IBS? Approximately 20% of adults have gastrointestinal problems. Most common symptoms are abdominal pain, heartburn, diarrhea and constipation. Stress situations, anxiety and depression can precipitate symptoms.
Try to avoid foods that bother you. Avoid chewing gum and drinking sodas as well as coffee and nicotine. Try to get exercise, relaxing time and sleep. Symptoms of Irritable Bowel syndrome can be similar to other illnesses. For this reason you need to see your gastroenterologist to exclude reasons for your problems. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) should not be confused with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are two types of IBD. If you have abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, bloody stools and weight loss you need to contact your gastroenterologist immediately.

Do you have constipation problems?

Constipation is an uncomfortable, sometimes painful condition. Often there is lack of liquids and fiber in diet. You should have approximately 25 grams of fiber daily and drinking about 4-6 glasses of liquids per day. Over the counter laxatives can sometimes precipitate ischemic colitis. Chronic constipation can be a serious problem and in particular if you notice blood in stool you should consult with you gastroenterologist.
Hemorroids and constipation are often interrelated. Hemorrhoids are results of straining and increased pressure of the veins of the rectum. Sometimes hemorrhoids needs to be treated or removed.

Are you gluten sensitive?

Picture
Celiac Sprue is a disease of the Small Bowel. When there is sensitivity or allergy to gluten the portion of the Small Bowel that absorbs nutrients becomes damaged. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and some oats. It is important that people sensitive to gluten remain on a gluten free diet. Untreated Celiac Disease can have severe consequences. Celiac Disease is often seen in people with immune system disorders such as type one diabetes mellitus, microscopic colitis and hypothyroidism. Patients often present with fatigue symptoms, diarrhea, anemia and certain vitamin deficiencies.
